A Brooklyn jury awarded Mr. Vargas $17.5 million for the City of New York’s violation of his civil rights for failing to provide him medical care while in custody. The jury found that the police officers involved failed to provide the necessary medical treatment and awarded $17.5 million to Mr. Vargas.
Joseph Demonte first developed a passion for law while attending St. John’s University, where a law course sparked his interest in the field. After completing his bachelor’s degree at St. John’s, Joseph continued his legal education at Pace Law School. He graduated cum laude from Pace in 2024, following a similarly distinguished undergraduate career, having graduated cum laude from St. John’s in 2021.
During law school, Joseph gained valuable experience interning for Justice Orlando Marrazzo Jr., where he was able to observe personal injury trials and developed a passion for litigation and plaintiff work. He enjoys helping people in need and making a meaningful impact on his clients’ lives.
Joseph joined Harris, Keenan & Goldfarb on August 12, 2024. During law school, he was selected to represent his school in a national mock trial competition, where his team won the entire tournament, and he was named Best Advocate in the championship round.
He has received recognition for his academic achievements, including the Advocate of the Year Award 2023-2024 from Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University and the Outstanding Advocate Award 2023-2024, issued by the Texas Young Lawyer Association at the National Trial Advocacy Competition.
Outside of work, Joseph enjoys trying new restaurants, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
